Project Overview

Project Overview

While supermarkets have remained relatively unchanged in the past few decades, tech is being introduced that has the potential to make a big difference. The current experience with the Shopic Smart Cart is in early stages of development, and has a lot of room to grow. Some things I wanted to keep in mind:

  • consider what areas of shopping would benefit from digital technology

  • be mindful of the physical experience of shopping - in order to use the smart cart, users will likely be multitasking

  • focus on both the user's and the store's needs

THE OVERARCHING GOAL

HMW use interactive tools to make the shopping experience “better”?

THE RUBRIC
THE RUBRIC

Using the Nielsen/Norman Severity Rating system as a guide, I tested the Shopic Smart Cart in Wegmans on several categories of usability and gave it a letter grade A - F.

  • A - Amazing! No fixes needed

  • B - Very good! Small cosmetic fixes would be nice.

  • C - Fine. It functions, but has a lot of room to be more intuitive.

  • D - Bad. Struggled to use.

  • F - Horrendous. Nearly or completely unusable.

02. The Scope

02. The Scope

WHAT AM I GOING TO FOCUS ON?
WHAT AM I GOING TO FOCUS ON?

Based on my heuristic evaluation, I decided to focus how to bring shopping lists into the Shopic experience. This seemed like a clear area of opportunity - everyone needs a list when they shop.

WHAT ARE MY ASSUMPTIONS?
WHAT ARE MY ASSUMPTIONS?

In order to limit the scope to a reasonable, I worked with a set of four assumptions about the user.

  • User has a shopper's club account

  • User has the Wegmans app downloaded

  • The Wegmans app gives the user the ability to create multiple different lists at one time

  • User has made one or more lists

  • both interviewees felt that the information on the page was sufficient

  • both expressed a desire for improvements in scannability

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE SHOPIC ATTACHMENT?
WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE SHOPIC ATTACHMENT?

The Shopic can be placed on any cart with the plastic attachment piece, which can in turn be fitted to any type of cart. It's placed right at the user's hand-level.

DEVELOPING INTERACTIONS
DEVELOPING INTERACTIONS

After finding a basic structure and onboarding experience that worked, I began to work on developing how the user would interact with the cart while shopping.

DEVELOPING A VISUAL STYLE

Keeping in mind my goals of discoverability and clean design, I began working on a visual style that would balance that with incorporating the store's brand in some way.

TAKEAWAYS
TAKEAWAYS

I was successful in my goals of efficiency through clear hierarchy, clean visual design through strategic use of whitespace, and discoverability through consistent design language and structure.

The focus on function over form left me with a simple user interface that prioritized ease of use in multitasking scenarios.

NEXT STEPS
NEXT STEPS
  • Push the personality harder and see where I can add additional character to the visual designs

  • Create a deeper prototype video that functions more like a product pitch or advertisement

  • Conduct user testing to understand any remaining pain points and adjust designs accordingly
